Help › Glossary and do-not-translate
Mark content that must not be translated
Sometimes a whole part of a page should stay as written. A product code, a name, a poem, a price table in a fixed language. For that, mark the element in your page.
How#
Add translate="no" to the element:
<span translate="no">Acme Pro 3000</span>
You can also add the class notranslate:
<p class="notranslate">This sentence is never translated.</p>
Everything inside that element is left alone, including nested elements.
What is skipped without any marking#
The product never translates script, style, code, pre, kbd or the content of a textarea.
Which tool to use#
| You want | Use |
|---|---|
| One word or name to stay the same everywhere | The glossary |
| A specific part of one page to stay as written | translate="no" or notranslate |
| A part of a page that your framework redraws and may overwrite | translate="no" on that element |
After you add a mark#
Add the mark to your page, then scan again so the strings inside are no longer collected. Strings that were already translated stay in your list. They are no longer used on that element.
Platforms#
On WordPress and Shopify, add the attribute in your theme or editor's HTML view. Some page builders remove unknown attributes. The class notranslate is easier to keep in those.
