What is and is not translated
Translated#
- Text in your pages: headings, paragraphs, lists, buttons, menus and table cells.
- Text that appears after the page loads. The loader watches for changes.
- Some attribute text:
alt,title,placeholder,aria-label, the label of a button, and the content of selected meta tags.
Left alone on purpose#
- Code and technical blocks:
script, style, code, pre, kbdand the content oftextarea. - Anything inside an element with
translate="no"or the classnotranslate. See Mark content that must not be translated. - Text that has no letters in it, such as a number or a symbol.
- Terms in your do-not-translate list.
Cannot be reached#
- Text drawn into a
canvasor inside an image. - Text in PDFs.
- Text in an iframe that comes from another website.
- Text drawn inside a shadow DOM that the product does not open: verify for your widgets.
- Checkout, customer accounts and order pages on Shopify. Shopify draws them.
Limits#
- A text block longer than 20,000 characters is not translated.
- Text in curly braces, such as
{word}, is treated as a variable and kept as it is. If you write curly braces in ordinary prose, they are left untouched. - With the script tag, page titles, meta descriptions, structured data, link addresses and sitemaps are not translated for search engines. See SEO and the script tag.
When something is missing#
A missing translation always shows your original text. It is never an error. If a visitor sees a mix of languages, see Only some text is translated.
