The wrong language is shown
How the language is chosen#
The loader picks a language in this order:
- The address. A language prefix such as
/fr/wins. - The visitor's own choice, saved in their browser.
- A suggestion from the browser's language, only if you turned it on. It is a suggestion. The page does not change until the visitor accepts.
The loader never redirects a visitor by their location or their browser language.
Common causes#
- A saved choice. The visitor picked a language once. It is remembered. Choosing the original language in the switcher restores your page.
- A language address that you did not expect. If a page address starts with a language prefix, that language is used, whatever the visitor chose before.
- A cached page. Your server or page cache may be serving a page for another language at that address. Check what the cache keys on.
- A page marked as already translated. Pages made on the server carry a marker,
data-rl-ssr, that names their language. When the loader's language equals the marker, the loader leaves the page as it is. Check that the marker names the language you expect.
Reset a browser#
In the browser's site data settings, clear the site's data. Or in the developer tools, remove the item named rl:<site key>:lang from local storage, then reload.
Reset it for everyone#
You cannot reset visitors' browsers from the dashboard.
Test#
Use a private window. Try the original address, then a language address. Then use the switcher and reload.
