Quality flags

Partly builtLast updated

On this page

Machine translations pass automatic checks. If a check finds something, the string gets a flag in the editor. The checks are written and tested as a separate module. Whether every translation job in the finished product runs them is OPEN: the job pipeline already rejects broken tags and placeholders by itself. Flags help you decide what to read first. They do not prove that a translation is good, and an unflagged translation can still be wrong.

Errors mean the translation should not go live as it is. Warnings mean look at it.

Errors#

FlagMeaning
emptyThe translation is empty.
bad-charsIt contains control or replacement characters.
tags-mismatchA tag is missing, extra or renumbered.
tag-nestingTags are not properly nested.
placeholder-mismatchA placeholder is missing, extra or changed.
leftover-tokenAn internal glossary marker was left in the text.
escape-mismatchEscaped characters differ from the source, or a raw < appeared.
unexpected-htmlThe translation contains HTML-like markup that is not in the source.
glossary-violationA do-not-translate term is missing.
wrong-scriptLess than half of the letters are in the script expected for the language.
engine-errorThe engine call failed.
engine-count-mismatchThe engine returned the wrong number of results.

Warnings and notes#

FlagMeaning
glossary-preferred-missingA preferred translation was not used.
untranslatedThe translation is identical to the source.
length-ratioIt is much longer than the source (over 3 times) or much shorter (under a quarter). Only checked for text of 20 characters or more.
numbers-changedA number from the source is missing from the translation.
fuzzy-memory-matchIt was reused from an earlier translation that matched except for capitals or punctuation.

What the editor shows#

The editor names tags-mismatch and glossary-violation in plain labels. Other flags are shown by their code.

How to clear a flag#

Fix the translation and save, or read it and mark it as reviewed. Both clear the flags on that row. See Edit in the dashboard.

Some flags can be correct. A brand name may be the same in two languages, so untranslated is expected there. Add it to the glossary.
