Translate a Squarespace site through Code Injection
Squarespace has a Code Injection area for the page head. The script reads published translation files and swaps the text in the visitor's browser.
Who it is for
- Squarespace owners who need visitors to be able to read the site in their language.
- Sites where a manual page per language is more work than the benefit.
- Anyone who wants to keep their content in one place and review translations in a dashboard.
Honest limits
- Script-only translation keeps one URL per page, so search engines get no separate indexable page per language. For search traffic, use Squarespace's own multilingual options (manual pages per language) and add hreflang.
- Squarespace says checkout pages do not support custom code, so the cart and checkout stay in your source language.
- Code Injection is available only on some Squarespace plans; check yours. On version 7.0, Ajax page loading can interfere with injected code, so test the switcher.
How it works in 3 steps
Translate in the dashboard
We scan the text, translate it and you review. Publish when you are happy.
Paste the script
In Settings > Developer Tools > Code Injection, paste the script into the Header box and save. Menu names vary by version.
Visitors choose a language
The script swaps text from static files and remembers the choice. If a file cannot be loaded, your original text stays.
Questions
Can I translate my checkout?
No. Squarespace does not support custom code on checkout pages, so they stay in your source language.
Is it good for SEO?
Only partly. The script helps visitors, but search engines do not get separate translated pages. Read the guide on client-side translation and SEO before you decide.
Which Squarespace plans work?
Code Injection is available on some plans. Squarespace's own help page lists them; check yours before you start.
What happens if your servers are down?
The files are static and cached, so visitors keep their translations. If none can be loaded they see your original text.
